This is a traditional European-style joiner's bench, which is very heavy and stable using mortise & tenon joinery.  It is designed for general cabinetry and furniture making, and has many work holding options with a heavy front vise and tail vise.  Beech wood was used, however any hard, durable wood will work very well.  Softwood, while a bit less durable, can be used too.  The material used for the top was pre-laminated countertop material.
